Spoilage of water-mixed metalworking fluids by mircobiological organisms is one of the biggest threats for quality assurance, work and process safety in the mass production of metal parts. A good example is in the automotive industry. This product offers the metalworking industry a biocide free fragrant solution for all possible applications. This is a microbiocidal and antifungal system cleaner.
Water-based operations including, but not limited to drilling, turning, milling, sawing and grinding are used nearly everywhere in metalworking. The water in the coolants gives microorganisms the perfect environment to grow and multiply. Contamination and then the inevitable spread of bacteria, yeasts and fungi can not be avoided. Microbes can multiply, grow and spread very quickly. Usually within a few hours they increase from 100 to a incredible 10,000,000 organisms per ml. The results of microbial contamination are extremely disagreeable and can lead to expensive manufacturing failures.
These microorganisms can alter both the composition of the coolant and the technical properties. The consequences can be a decrease in the amount of emulsifiers. This can lead to manufacturing and quality issues. Microorganisms excrete metabolites, substances produced as a result of consumption. The metabolites decrease the pH value and cause unpleasant odours. Uninhibited growth can lead to the formation of biofilms in the system. These can grow to a thickness of several centimetres and result blockages of pumps and filtration units.
The symptoms of contamination are diverse and unpleasant:
- decrease in pH value
- corrosion
- blockage of pipes and filters
- odour formation
- oil separation
- foam formation
- sudden occurrence of skin irritation
Systems Cleaner is an alkaline disinfectant and cleaner for production plants and circulating systems. It is designed to be used at 2% in water but for badly infected systems 3% is appropriate.
Ideally the machine should be emptied of coolant (where Possible) and filled to the level of covering the pump with a solution of Systems Cleaner in water. This should be circulated for 8 hours before emptying out, flushing and refilling with coolant. Short cuts, such as adding the Systems Cleaner to the coolant will work but to a lesser degree. Great care should be taken if attempting to machine with the Systems Cleaner present because of skin and eye hazard.
